Tony criticizes Govt's unilateral law formulation as an Affront to Democratic Principles Supports genuine demands of truck-drivers unions

JAMMU: Taranjit Singh Tony, General Secretary of Pradesh Congress Committee, J&K, and DDC Member Suchetgarh has strongly criticized the Centre for the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) law addressing hit-and-run cases.

Speaking at the review meeting held here today, Tony expressed serious concern that the legislation, which impacts drivers—considered the backbone of the Indian economy—was implemented without adequate consultation with the affected class and without engaging in a meaningful dialogue with the opposition in the Parliament.

Tony emphasized that the government’s decision to formulate laws without engaging in constructive discussions is a direct affront to the democratic principles that underpin the nation. He particularly lamented the enactment of a law affecting drivers, a crucial workforce contributing significantly to the Indian economy, without adequate deliberation.

Highlighting the apparent disregard for due process, Tony pointed out that the law was introduced when more than 150 Members of Parliament were suspended, further raising concerns about the democratic ethos within the decision-making process.

He voiced his apprehension about the potential severe consequences for the hard-working class of drivers, who often operate on limited earnings. He asserted that imposing stringent legal measures on this essential workforce could negatively impact their lives and well-being.

“The government, which seems to run democracy with the whip, has forgotten the fundamental distinction between ’emperor’s orders’ and ‘justice’,” he added.

Tony underscored the need for a more inclusive and consultative approach in legislative matters to ensure that the voices and concerns of the affected classes are heard and considered before enacting laws that could have far-reaching consequences.
