PULWAMA, JANUARY 09: A crucial meeting of the District Level Committee of Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) was convened today under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pulwama, Dr Basharat Qayoom to formulate a comprehensive action plan to tackle the issues of drug abuse.

Addressing the gathering, DC highlighted the gravity of the situation, delving into topics such as the prevalence of drug addiction, age groups affected, locations prone to drug peddling, and the cultivation of illicit substances. He urged all line departments, especially members of NCORD, to intensify efforts in combating drug trafficking and to enhance coordination among various Government bodies.

Dr Basharat emphasized the importance of conducting extensive awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate the youth about the dangers and detrimental effects of drug consumption. He called for a united front from all departments to break the supply chain, take strict action against those involved in drug trade, and implement a multi-faceted rehabilitation, counseling, and guidance policy.

Recognizing the pivotal role of families, DC sought cooperation from parents and religious leaders in keeping youngsters away from drugs. He underscored the need for a collective effort to address not only drug abuse but also the associated social issues and crimes.

Assuring unwavering support, DC pledged assistance from the District Administration to save the youth from the adverse effects of drugs.

During the meeting, officers provided updates on the current drug menace situation, offering suggestions and proposing measures for rehabilitation of drug victims.

Enforcement measures, including FIRs, property attachments, and reducing areas under illicit crops, were reviewed as part of a comprehensive strategy. The chair was briefed on the lodging of 114 FIRs and the attachment of 6 properties in line with prior directives against the offenders.

Additionally, DC stressed the importance of developing an annual plan to comprehensively address the challenges of drug abuse, encompassing coordinated enforcement actions, awareness campaigns, rehabilitation initiatives, monitoring mechanisms and switching over to sustainable crops.

In a proactive move, the DC directed the social welfare department to submit a proposal for a rehabilitation center for drug de-addiction at the district headquarters in adherence to scheme guidelines. He further stressed on setting up rehabilitation centres across the District.

Furthermore, revenue authorities were instructed to issue notices against the cultivation of illicit poppy and cannabis in the district, signaling the administration’s commitment to curbing the root causes of the drug problem.

The meeting served as a testament of the ultimate resolution of District Administration in its determination to create a drug-free environment, safeguarding the well-being of the community, and fostering a brighter future for the youth.
